Counselor

Excellence Coach – We seek racially conscious professionals with counseling licenses, lived experiences, academic backgrounds, and clinical practices rooted and centered on Black children and families. Our coaches should engage our children and their families from a strength-based approach and perspective. In this role, we seek counselors and social workers consciously employing research and practices rooted in the experiences of Black children and families. Coaches are part of a team of social workers/counselors with lived experiences reflecting our students and their families. 

Part-time flexible up to 30 hours per week. May require evenings and weekend work. 

  • We invite professionals who view our families from a strength-based perspective and will collaborate with them with the mindset that it takes a village for our children to thrive and flourish.
  • A criminal history, background check and sexual offender check is required on all candidates

Overview of Job Description

  • Creates intervention plans for at-promise students, in collaboration with families 
  • Develops and delivers workshops, events and opportunities that support fellows and their families; may make referrals for other resources
  • Planning, development and implementation of academy programs
  • Collaborates with staff on mentoring, career shadowing and other practical skill-building learning opportunities
  • Must strictly honor the privacy, security and confidentiality of student records and other sensitive information according to state, federal and college regulations

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Highly skilled in student achievement and academic success for K-12 students
  • Ability, desire and commitment to work with Black children
  • Effective communication, report-writing and workshop delivery skills
  • Performs duties with empathy, sensitivity, understanding and supportive attitude
  • Must be sensitive to the needs of Black/African American students and families with diverse needs, backgrounds and abilities

Experience

  • Providing support services for students with diverse learning styles, needs and experiences
  • Providing guidance on a myriad of sensitive issues in the context of family
  • Working with Black, African American populations
  • Collaborating with families to support student academic, social and emotional development

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s or advanced degree in education or school counseling or social work licensure strongly preferred.
