ABLE Fellows

Black Children are gifted, talented, bright, curious learners, critical thinkers, leaders, inventors, and so much more, but that potential must be nourished consistently to emerge and thrive. We also call our Fellows, Omowe, which in the African Nigerian Yoruba language means scholar.

ABLE is primarily a virtual out-of-school program affirming, engaging, supporting, inspiring, motivating, positioning, and guiding Black, African American, grade 2–8 students in Northeast Wisconsin (NEW) to excel in school and out-of-school spaces. ABLE is a year-round providing structured, one-on-one, Afrocentric, Holistic, Culturally Relevant, Culturally Responsive, and interactive high-impact tutoring, leadership, and social-emotional coaching at no cost to families. Membership Benefits & Opportunities for Fellows:

  • Personal Academic Coaching.
  • Personalized Academic support in Science, Technology, Reading, Arts, and Math (STREAM)
  •  Special Education and English Language Learning (E.L.L.) services for fellows who desire these services. 
  • High impact, high dosage virtual tutoring (at least three times a week by trained Village members).

  • Broadband access for families who need it. 
  • V.I.P. access to all African Heritage, Inc. programs.
  • COVID-19 vaccine education, information, and resources.
  • Culturally Relevant, Responsive, and Engaging Social-Emotional Support.
  • Job skilling and digital training opportunities for families and caregivers of ABLE fellows.
  • Personalized support from a village of experts with expertise in   Afrocentric counseling, social work, education, human services, and other related areas centered on the needs of Black students and families.

Whom We Seek

  • ABLE, an invitation-only pilot program based in NEW and designed for Black students to become active participants in their social, emotional, and academic journey, is currently seeking student participants and their families. All applications will be approved. 
  • We invite grades 2–8 students.
  • ABLE is seeking collaborative partners in the form of individuals and groups or organizations committed to the holistic well-being of Black children. Through ABLE’s village approach, our fellows will achieve success that will reflect in their home, school, and community lives.
